Cycling for Balance

Leading a balanced life brings countless benefits, but it can be time-consuming. Sometimes it can be tricky to fit in enough exercise as well as find time to cook healthy food and look after your family.

That is why I love cycling. It is an excellent way to stay active and brings many other benefits.

Potential for an all body exercise

If you mix up your cycling, you can do far more than just exercise your legs. For example, cross training can give your whole body a good workout.

Keep your weight under control

Cycling is a good way to burn calories, and do it fast. An hour of moderate riding consumes between 472 and 745 calories. How much you burn depends on how heavy you are.

Stimulate your brain

When you ride a bike, you are stimulating your hippocampus area, which is where new brain cells are created. A study carried out by Illinois University showed that people who took up cycling improved their mental agility test scores by 15%.

Boost your immune system

Riding a bike is also a great way to stimulate your immune system. The University of North Carolina found that those who cycled for around 30 minutes, five times a week, took 50% fewer sick days than those who did not exercise at all.

Live for longer

When a team from King’s College London looked at the fitness levels of 2,400 identical twins, they discovered that those who cycled for 45 minutes, 3 times a week, were biologically younger. In fact, the cyclists were nine years younger than their genetically identical siblings were.

A great stress buster

Riding a bike is also a good way to keep your stress levels under control. Exercising outdoors, during daylight hours, stimulates the release of cortisol. This hormone relieves stress, so cycling is also good for your emotional health.

Stay young and beautiful

You can enjoy cycling for most of your life. Toddlers love it, but there are also plenty of people in their 80s and 90s who still ride and enjoy a full and active life.

Regularly riding a bike will give you the fitness levels of a much younger person. It will also help to keep the wrinkles at bay.

Recent research carried out by a team at Stanford University shows that the skin of cyclists is more resilient. It copes better with UV light, which means healthier, younger looking skin.

Save money and time

Perhaps the best thing about cycling is that it is potentially easy to incorporate into your life. If you live close enough, you can turn a stressful commute into a pleasant bike ride.

Cycling to work is a fantastic way to exercise more without burning up your precious time. All you are doing is turning the time you normally spend commuting to work into an opportunity to exercise as well. Taking this approach can easily save you money as well because you are not paying out for train fare.

Radial Cycles, the online bike shop is a great place to find everything you need. They sell good quality equipment at very affordable prices. When you consider how beneficial cycling is investing in a decent bike and equipment, makes a lot of sense. Doing so really is a sound investment.
