How to Plan the Perfect Short Trip to Rome

Rome is an amazing city. There is so much to see and do there, which strangely makes it a tricky place for tourists. If you want to see the best of Rome, careful planning is essential. This is especially the case if you are only planning to be there for a few days.

Stay in the centre

If you can afford to do so, it is best to stay in the centre of the city. This will save you from wasting time travelling into Rome in the morning and back out again at night. If you just drop back a few streets behind the Spanish Steps, there are several hotels and bed and breakfast establishments that you can book.

Eat breakfast in the squares

By enjoying breakfast in the most famous squares, you can combine eating with sightseeing. Of course, when you eat in these areas you will pay a bit more than you would if you chose a back street cafe. However, breakfast is a relatively cheap meal so most people can afford to pay an extra Euro or two for breakfast.

The Piazza del Popolo is a great place to do this. After breakfast, you can stroll around the square to enjoy the fountains and the Egyptian obelisk of Ramesses II.

Attend events

If you love live events and the arts, you are going to have a fantastic time in the city. There is always something going on, all you need to do is to buy a ticket and show up.

Often you can combine attending an event with some sightseeing. For example, in the summer months, you can combine a visit to the Terme di Caracalla Roman Baths with enjoying an opera. You can find out more about these performances and buy Rome opera tickets by clicking the link.

Take some tours

Another great way to make sure that you see as much as possible when you are short on time is to take a couple of tours. In Rome, you are spoilt for choice.

The best are the hop on hop off bus tours. There are several of these available in Rome. Each one is designed to let you take in the most important sights in each part of the city, and do so at your own pace. You can find out more about the various routes from this article.

Rome is a surprisingly compact city, so walking can also be a good way to get around. You can either take in the sights at your leisure or book one of the many walking tours that are available in every part of the city. Taking a Segway or moped tour is fun, and both are great ways to get around.

Be prepared

Working out your itinerary before you get there, will save you time and make sure that you do things in the most efficient order. It is also wise to download a couple of apps to help you to get around, before you leave home. That way if something goes wrong you will have the information you need to be able to re-plan your day.
